Out with the old...

Well, just a few hours left of the old year! I realise now all the things I promised myself to do have largely gone by the board...

It's always a bit sad, saying goodbye to the old year - all the hopes and dreams that somehow didn't quite make it into the frame.....

But, there have been new and exciting challenges - Like NaNoWriMo (which wasn't even on the radar this time last year!)

So, looking forward to 2010 (I have decided to say it as 'twenty-ten' !) there are some hurdles to jump (stunt-driving....!), trips to America and both halves of Ireland (N&S), and a better and more efficient use of time so I can actually find space to read all the amazing books I keep picking up, and getting a bit more ruthless about writing....

.....only a few more hours to go, then we barrel into January once more! I wonder if 2010 is big enough to hold all the things I'm planning?

Work? Why do I have to go to work?

So, my Christmas holiday was interrupted by having to go to work today (blurgh!) but at least business was fairly brisk! (I did have time to make sure my fav. authors' works were prominently displayed! ;-p)

Having 'done' my back on Monday, it was touch and go whether I'd manage to make it into work - but I struggled from my sick-bed ! Devotion or what?

Anyway, a last 4-hr shift tomorrow rounds off 2009 - and with self-service looming on the horizon in 2010 who knows where I'll be this time next year, or if I'll still have a job..... (I'll have to get serious about this 'writing' malarkey!)

Into the last pages of 'J&W' - then a Mark Billingham, a Simon Kernick and possibly interspersed with a Lee Child..........ah, books! Who needs TV?!

All done and dusted...

...well, almost! So that's another Christmas Day kicked into touch, then!

We ventured out (and found the roads weren't as bad as predicted!) to Christmas Morning service, reminding us of the real 'reason for the season'. It was a last chance to sing carols, too!

Then back for lunch - feeling grateful that we were able to enjoy good food in warmth and comfort (and with good company!)

Then came present-opening (interrupted by the Queen's speech, of course!)

Amongst all the lovely pressies I received I got the one I'm most excited about (esp. as the family were very quiet after dropping various hints, so I thought they'd decided against it)
- a one-day STUNT-DRIVING course! :-)

So I shall be learning how to do hand-brake turns, j-turns, skids, two-wheelers etc. and a high-speed action chase....! hee hee hee!

(well, that might help with the old writing, - give a little more authenticity......! I'd better not ask for a weapons experience course next...;-p)

So, now it's Boxing day - otherwise known as 'bubble & squek' day in this household! (I get told to make sure I cook 'too many' vegs, JUST so there's plenty left over...!)

Haven't got to the stage where I can sneak away and enjoy a good book yet - but it's nice to have all the family together, so I can wait.

......and....... YAAAAAY! STUNT-DRIVING !!!! :-)

Great hopes....

I had great hopes of getting the nano-novel to the finishing line yesterday - alas, a number of interruptions put paid to that! I anticipate it will be finishhed in the near future, but I refuse to be drawn of declaring it will be done this side of Christmas - but who knows!

Anyway - it is in the very final stages and the storyline and memorable 'lines' are safely stored away in my mind, just waiting for that valuable resource known as 'a spare five minutes' to be located!

The library could have better been described as a 'morgue' this evening - I actually had a half an hour with no-one using the comupter suite (but if you don't tell anyone, I spent the half hour having a noodle around the 'Thrillers, Killers 'n' Chillers blogspot to read the stories there! And maybe think about submitting something myself!)

Still, one more day at work and then not back until 30th! So, am looking forward to the Christmas break - hoping there will be time for getting my feet up and reading the pile of books I have on the 'go' and drinking vast quantities of red wine - stuff the turkey!!!!

Merry Christmas, anyone who drops by to read this - and happy New Year!

This is the weekend when we, as a family, traditionally celebrate what has come to be known as 'mini Christmas'!

As we live in the Midlands, it is easier for different family members to join us here. The 'South Coast' contigent arrived today (well, one member is joining us tomorrow!) then on Sunday the Welsh and Nottingham 'brigade' will be present!

And by Monday everything will be back to 'normal' - aaaaaaahhhh!

I love the family (actually, it's Oh's lot!) but one can have too much of a good thing!

So, any thoughts of Nano-novelling are put on hold - maybe Monday might see a little more done - maybe even get to those two special words - 'THE END' ! (now, that would be nice!)

Books, books, books....

I'm really getting into Matt Hilton's "JaW" - trying not to rush it........! (That's 'Judgement and Wrath, not his actual mandible! )

But I have a pile of books I've yet to read - perhaps if I didn't have to go out to work or gave up eating or washing (oooo noooo!) or sacrificed my love of writing, then maybe (but it's a big MAYBE!) I might stand a chance of getting to the bottom of said pile. Then, today, I get another suggestion from one of the reading forums I log onto - the 'Roy Grace' series by Peter James! I ask you, it's bad enough I see all these good books at work in the library but now my fellow forumites are adding to the list.....!

Oh well, I shall not be bored in old age - assuming I get to the end of the pile before I retire..!

The Nano-novel is grinding towards the last few pages - but will it be done by Christmas.....?

Another day bites the dust!

Well, I haven't accomplished what I wanted to - not gone near the Nano-novel! Was intending to but got sidetracked into writing some fan-fiction yesterday! Anyway, tomorrow is another day - I'm still trying to get that last little bit sorted in my head, who knows, I may yet succeed!

So, today, after playing taxi-cabs for OH I managed to get stuck into "Judgement and Wrath" - ah, Joe Hunter and Rink and a new baddie - Dantelion!

Shiney, shiney, Christmas things!

Just got back from a wee jaunt over to the German Christmas Market in Birmingham - a wonderful mixture of tastes and smells and pretty shiney things and lots of sparkly lights!

Thankfully, we timed it just right - it was crowded but not heaving - but if we'd stayed any longer I think I would have got frustrated with people who just walk out in front of you and stop! I wonder what these people would be like behind the wheel - wouldn't want to be behind them in traffic, that's for sure!

Done absolutely nothing to the Nano-novel today (except think about it while I was doing housework!) - so, hopefully tomorrow I'll be inspired for that last big push.....!

Where did today go...

Ok - who stole today? I want it back, right now!

It took me ages to get going this morning - I half-did so many jobs and never seemed to accomplish much!

I had a brief sojurn into the world of Nan0 and managed to rustle up about 1200 words, and I think I'm now onto the penultimate scene!

Then, I had to call into work for a meeting (on my day off!) but the silver lining in that particular cloud is that not only do I now have a copy of R.J.Ellory's 'A Simple Act of Violence' on CD audio (so I can see what a little friend of mine has been raving about...!) but I also have Matt Hilton's newie, "Judgement and Wrath" which I promised myself for after NaNoWriMo! (big grin!) - so I shall declare that there will be a few days of indugence!!!

And the big-action-sequence-showdown scene might have to wait until the weekend.....! (maybe)

Wednesday, 9 December 2009

OK - I'm getting there...

I set aside today for writing - and that's pretty much what I've done, apart from caffeine breaks and a few journeys to the back door to persuade the dog it might be a good idea to go out and "do" what needs to be done!

So the Nano-novel is drawing to a close - currently 67k (well, OK - actually 66,996 to be precise!) - and I just have two or three more "scenes" to go! I'm hoping a night out will clear my brain ready to tackle it tomorrow - who knows, it caould all be over (bar the screaming / editing / re-writes) in twenty-four hours!!!

And what will I do with myself wine and settling down with a good book seems like an obvious choice! I have a Mark Billingham' on the go and a couple of Simon Kernick's waiting, plus some of Lee Child's 'Reacher' series. But I'm hoping to start Matt Hilton's newie - "Judgement and Wrath" - I read the first one "Dead Men's Dust" and it was mindblowing - so, I wanted to wait until I could give 'J&W' my undivided attention!

Like I've said before: so many little time....!

Tuesday, 8 December 2009

It's a hard life....

So, today I started my working week at 4pm........ and finished it at 8pm! I think I can cope with hours like that! ;-) That's the benefit of having annual leave to use up before Dec 31st!

Tomorrow, I intend to give over to writing yet more of the Nano-novel - would be nice to get a 3-4k done!

I was hoping to get a bit more done tonight - but fatigue has taken over, just added a mere 500wds or so. Still, it's better than nothing.

I'm off to enjoy a few more pages of Mark Billingham's "Scaredycat" - am getting a soft spot for DI Tom Thorne! I have a pile of books I want to read, and an ever-lengthening list of authors to little many books......!

monday, monday...

Well - I FINALLY got back to my Nano-novel! This was after putting up the remaining Christmas dec's - yes, I know it's very early - but as dear daughter wanted to put the tree up at the weekend and I had the boxes littering the place I thought I might as well go ahead and put up the garlands, too. So now it is all looking very Yuletide-ish, with greenery and lights....!

I attacked the housework (well, some of it!) but this afternoon I declared an amnesty on myself and slipped the USB key into the PC and went back to the murder, mayhem and other shennanigans that is my Nano-novel!

Oh, it was like meeting up with old friends again....well, it's about a week since I last did anything useful on it! The current word count stands at 61,481, but there's at least six chapters left, probably at least another 10-15k. And then that's the first draft finished.

The plan is to leave it to 'stew' over the Christmas break and go back to it with fresh 'editing' eyes in January!

I quite like this writing business (so far!) - if I could secure enough income to give up the day-job I'd be like a pig in ****! Dream on!

Oh well, a quick break and then back to the plot!!

Day 2 in the world of Blog!

So, I understood Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest? Not for this li'l bunnie, it would seem!
Having taken our daughter back home to Birmingham and returned with a few of her boxes (she'll be moving back home in a couple of weeks!!) I decided I really needed to attack the pile of ironing that is perched like a mini-Matterhorn in the utility room!

Then, child#2 arrives - avec a pile of washing (no rush, Mum!). I WAS planning to clear the decks (ie. purge the house after a month of virtually no housework during November because I was attempting the NaNoWriMo challenge!) and thereby leave tomorrow largely free to continue/finish the NaNo novel........

Oh well - they say miracles DO happen....!

(Thankyou, Mr Hilton btw, for looking in here! You were quick off the mark considering this blog only went live last night!!)

....and she's off !!

Well, I finally bit the bullet and set up my blog!

This may prove a useful space to add my wit and comments on all the strange and crazy things that happen in my life!

Who knows how many hours I can now waste (ahem!) here?

Well, I did warn the kids I wouldn't go quietly - I have no intention of launching into comfy slippers and vegging out in front of the the "box" (although an occasional deviation into that scenario may arise at some point!) - so, dear reader, you have been warned!
